The moringa tree’s nutritional profile contains nine essential amino acids with a plethora of polyphenols, phenolic acids and flavonoids which are essential for the body to function well. It has a level of protein usually only found in animal protein, and multiple vitamins and minerals. Almost all of the tree is consumable, including its bark, roots and flowers.

The benefits of this plant are numerous for both human and animals and include the ability to kill bacteria and harmful parasites, help control diabetes, regulate blood pressure and calm inflammation within the body.

It has more vitamin B3 than peanuts, more vitamin A than carrots, more fibre than oats, and up to 25 times more iron that is found in spinach, making it a natural multi vitamin and tool for the body’s general health.

Not only does it produce incredible health related benefits, but it is also responsible for the decline in poverty and malnutrition in the worlds poorer nations. The moringa tree is extremely hardy and grows rapidly in harsh environments where other plants struggle to survive and will grow to over three metres in height, making this an ideal solution to the malnutrition problems that hot and arid nations face. A recent initiative has been introduced where farmers in Ghana and other African and Asian countries are being taught to cultivate and produce edible consumables from the plant that they can eat and produce other consumables which they sell to a guaranteed market. This is enhancing both the health and wealth of these communities, where around three million deaths per year occur due to a lack of nutrition for children under the age of five. ativador

As more consumers are becoming aware of the benefits of moringa, health food and online distributors are quickly catching on and buying in stock. A series of videos by the British Council have been lunched prior to the Social Enterprise World Forum, taking place in Hong Kong on 25-27 September 2016. These videos demonstrate the positive impact that social enterprise initiatives are delivering across poverty stricken communities in Asia and Africa. The British Council have secured a collaboration of both Growth Masaic in Ghana and Investing for Good in the UK, who will be creating an investment fund to back MoringaConnect, a social enterprise initiative, together with other social enterprises in the region.

Founders of MoringaConnect, Kwami Williams and Emily Cunningham demonstrate how poverty is being seriously tackled in Ghana with tremendously positive progress with reducing malnutrition and poverty. They have developed a line of moringa tree based oils, infusions and sustenance products which are being sold and distributed through a global network.

Rich in protein, moringa is a hardy drought-resistant plant whose seeds produce rich anti-oxidant oils and leaves possess contain a high level of Vitamin A. It contains more calcium than milk, and surpasses the iron levels found in spinach. There is no surprise that this is locally referred to as “the Miracle Tree.

Maize farmers Ali Abdul Salam and his family grow maize and rice in central Ghana. They had been wanting to expand their farm but lacked the funding to do so. MoringaConnect approached them and were able to help by providing training, funding and mentoring with a guaranteed market for their production. By helping the Salam family and around 1,500 other farmers throughout Ghana, incomes have increased for these communities by up to 1,000 percent, making the exercise highly lucrative for the farmers involved. With such positive results, MoringaConnect will continue to expand into other African nations to assist poorer farmers.

Both co-founders have impressive degrees from MIT and Harvard and were each equally driven to develop a formula for people struggling in developing countries. They both took a class at D-Lab at MIT which has an emphasis on approaching these problems with sustainable solutions and have used their knowledge to apply to helping people help themselves. Part of their experience during their studies was to get involved alongside farmers and their families in Ghana who grew moringa. Their findings were that smallholder farms could work with moringa trees, a resource that was more or less in their own back yards.

Becoming a world-wide sensation, moringa’s properties boast a wealth of benefits for the health and wellbeing of people all across the world. Now, the “Miracle Tree” is also proving to be a great addition to the beloved green smoothie, making for a powerful, nutritious way to power up in the morning (or at any time of day really).

Why Add Moringa?

Various supplements are often added to smoothie recipes for added nutrition. By choosing other supplement options available at supermarkets or your local grocery store, you risk adding overpriced, preservative-filled powder to your favourite smoothie. Instead, by choosing to add moringa, you can be certain that you’re getting only the best nutrients, and maximum antioxidants. To put the cherry on top, moringa powder boasts a wealth of Vitamin C and protein—all without the overload of calories.

What you’ll need

To get started, you’ll need to collect the following ingredients:

  • – 1 cup of pineapple (chopped)
  • – 1 cup of aloe vera juice
  • – 1 cup of packed spinach
  • – 1 tablespoon of moringa powder

The process

It’s easy, quick and affordable, so there’s no excuse. Simply…

  • 1. Wash the spinach thoroughly and pat dry.
  • 2. Chop the pineapple into good sized pieces.
  • 3. Add spinach, pineapple, aloe juice and moringa together, and blend.
  • 4. Pour into a glass.
  • 5. Enjoy!

Quick tip

If you’d like to make the whole thing even easier, create a batch of the smoothie and pop it into the freezer by splitting it into mason jars. Alternatively, create mini-packets that can be thrown into the blender first thing in the morning (resealable sandwich bags are great for this).

Simply grab out of the freezer before work, throw it all in the blender and away you go—no mess or fuss (and no extra dollars spent at your local supermarket).

Its role in the traditional medicine field

Traditionally, it’s already used as a remedy for anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-depressants and even pain relief contexts. In other cases, it has also been known to assist with diabetes and asthma.
Now, however, these studies are finding there may be more to it than just that. The tree seemingly carries a number of powerful compounds that are able to go up against cancerous cells. The evidence

A number of lab tests have been carried out to find proof to back these results, a few of which have been published on PubMed. What’s more, the number of other advantages that these studies found indicate the path the plant may just carry towards fighting and curing cancer.
For example, moringa can also provide support towards:

  • – Increasing mental clarity

These benefits are just a few on a long list, and there’s likely to be more discovered in the near future. For now, however, researchers are continuing their investigation towards how the plant can help in the fight against cancer.

Around the world, Moringa Oleifera is known as The Miracle Tree – a natural source of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients unlike almost anything else found in nature. The universal love of this amazing plant is demonstrated in part through the various languages and cultures that use their own terms to describe it. Known as Mulunggay in the Phillipines, Bèn ailé in France and Marango in Costa Rica, there is barely a corner of the earth where this amazing plant hasn’t been used as a way to boost the health and wellbeing of people young and old.

But the origins of The Miracle Tree’s various names don’t just stem from country to country. In fact, there is a long list of terms used to describe Moringa that derive from the various different features found within this unique treasure.

Other terms used to describe Moringa Oleifera

One of the most unique things about The Miracle Tree is that most parts of it – from the roots to the seeds, oils, leaves and flowers – can be used for nutritional and healing purposes. Because of this, many of the alternate names for the tree derive from each of its individual features. These include…

Drumstick tree

This name references the long, thin appearance of the triangular seed pods that are found on Moringa Oleifera, known as ‘drumsticks’. These are most commonly used in South Asia by boiling the seed – which is rich in vitamin c, fibre, potassium and magnesium – and using it in a curry.

Horseradish tree

Quite simply, this name stemmed from the fact that the roots of the Horseradish Tree tastes like – you guessed it – horseradish. This part of the Moringa is often shredded and used as a type of condiment due to its very flavoursome qualities.

Ben Oil or Benzoil Tree

These terms refer to the oil that can be pulled from the seeds of a Moringa Tree. Ben Oil, as it is called, is an edible substance that is refined, clear and odourless. Used as an ingredient in various foods, skincare treatments and even as a biofuel, this derivative is extremely versatile and works to nourish the body of those who use it.

With so many different components, all with their own impressive list of health benefits, there is little wonder as to why all around the world Moringa is referred to as The Miracle Tree.
